Connectria ranked 9th out of the original field of 58 vendors, ahead of Amazon, Rackspace, Go Grid, Verizon/Terremark, Savvis, NaviSite, Joyent, BlueLock and OpSource among many others. Connectria was assessed against over 60 individual criteria and classified as “Outlying (Strong)” within the Challenging group behind the current market Leaders. This result placed Connectria in the top 30% of the total trusted IaaS market in Australia.

What is IaaS?

IaaS is generally defined as one of the three major categories under Cloud Computing, the others being Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). IaaS, SaaS and PaaS are all delivered over the web with services accessible in the cloud on-demand. They each are typically priced on a subscription basis (e.g. monthly fixed price) or pay as you go, along with the ability to scale up or down according to need. The differences among IaaS, SaaS and PaaS lie in how each service is used.

IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) allows any application to be run across a wide variety of computer infrastructure (e.g. servers, storage, network) according to customer need. It is the most flexible form of cloud computing and includes Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Hybrid Cloud variations.

SaaS (Software as a Service) allows a specific software application to be rented or used in the cloud as opposed to buying it (and managing it) yourself. Examples of SaaS applications are Yahoo mail, Google docs and Salesforce CRM. Many Connectria customers are SaaS providers who leverage our managed hosting infrastructure/services so they can concentrate upon their software and customers. In this instance, Connectria is the IaaS provider to our SaaS customers, who are the SaaS provider to their customers.

PaaS (Platform as a Service) is aimed at application developers. Here, developers can access infrastructure and tools in the cloud to create, test, deploy and host applications without having to invest in their own infrastructure and development environment.
